Salt Lake Jump Starts: Preparing for a Cold-Weather Call
If the car will not start on a cold morning, prepare a clear description before calling for roadside help.

If the car will not start on a cold morning, prepare a clear description before calling for roadside help. A weak battery is only one possible cause, and a jump-start request is not a promise that the vehicle will resume normal operation.
What to tell dispatch
- The pickup address and any garage, gate or parking restriction.
- The vehicle year, make and model.
- Whether the engine cranks and which warning lights appear.
- Recent starting problems or suspected damage.
Check the handbook
Use the manufacturer's guidance for battery access and approved connection points. Procedures vary, especially for hybrid and electric vehicles. Do not improvise a connection or assume that instructions for another model apply.
When not to attempt a boost
A damaged, leaking or frozen battery needs particular caution. Smoke, unusual odors or visible electrical damage should not be treated as an ordinary flat battery. Call emergency authorities first if there is fire or immediate danger.
Confirm the method and arrangements
Ask what help and equipment are appropriate for the vehicle's condition. Confirm current availability, an ETA and the price. No service method can guarantee that every electrical component is unaffected, and a jump start does not diagnose the charging system.
After the engine starts
Follow vehicle-specific guidance and arrange testing or diagnosis if symptoms continue. A vehicle that stalls or shows warnings may need transport rather than another attempted boost. Do not assume that a short drive fully recharges a depleted battery.
Review jump-start service or towing information for the appropriate next step.
