An I-15 Breakdown: Safety, Towing and Impound Questions

An interstate shoulder is not a safe place to leave a disabled vehicle indefinitely. After an I-15 breakdown, the immediate priorities are people, traffic danger and arranging appropriate help. This guide does not quote statutory fees or promise how long a vehicle may remain before removal.

Deal with immediate danger first

Call 911 for injuries, fire, a vehicle obstructing traffic or another immediate hazard. Give the highway, direction of travel, nearest exit or mile marker and vehicle position. Follow the responder's instructions about whether to remain inside or move to a protected location.

A requested tow versus an impound

A tow you arrange to a chosen destination is different from removal ordered by an authority or property owner. Authorization, destination, paperwork and applicable charges may differ. Ask who authorized the tow and where the vehicle is being taken.

Do not rely on a fixed waiting period

The circumstances and applicable rules matter. A vehicle creating a hazard may require a different response from one in a safe parking space. Contact the appropriate authority for instructions rather than treating an online article as permission to leave it on the shoulder.

Confirm charges for the actual request

For a voluntary tow, give dispatch the vehicle condition, pickup access and destination, then ask for the complete price. For an impounded vehicle, ask the yard or authorizing agency about release requirements and an itemized bill. Do not confuse a statutory maximum with a provider's standard price.

Keep the relevant records

If safe, note the pickup location, towing company, destination and authorization details. Keep receipts and release documents. Your insurer or roadside-assistance plan can explain its own coverage and reimbursement conditions.
