Vehicle Recovery Scenarios and the Details That Matter

Recovering a vehicle is not the same as towing one from an open parking lot. These examples describe recovery considerations, not a record of company rescues. A ditch, soft shoulder or damaged wheel can change the equipment and access needed.
A vehicle near a slope
Do not approach an unstable vehicle or stand below it. Describe its position from a safe place and tell dispatch whether anyone is inside. Emergency responders should be called first for injuries or immediate danger. The appropriate recovery method depends on the ground, vehicle position and a safe location for equipment.
Snow, mud and poor traction
Repeated wheel spinning can dig a vehicle deeper or damage components. Give dispatch the surface conditions and the distance to firm, accessible ground. A winch-out is not suitable for every location, and an ordinary tow truck cannot be assumed to reach every off-road site.
After water exposure
Do not enter floodwater to reach a vehicle or attempt to start an engine after substantial water exposure. Stay clear of an electric or hybrid vehicle with damaged high-voltage components. Contact emergency authorities if people are at risk and seek vehicle-specific professional advice before recovery or transport.
Damage changes loading
Tell dispatch about broken suspension, locked wheels, fluid leaks and loose bodywork. A vehicle that cannot roll may require different loading equipment from one that simply will not start. Avoid trying to pull it with an improvised strap or a passenger vehicle.
What to confirm before recovery
Ask whether the available equipment can handle the actual location and vehicle. Confirm the destination, access arrangements, estimated arrival time and price. An illustration of a difficult recovery is not a guarantee that a particular truck or service will be available.
When you need roadside help
For a disabled vehicle or a problem that cannot be handled safely, review towing service. Tell dispatch the pickup location, vehicle details and what happened so equipment and availability can be checked.
